来自韩国式古汉语。kim-,来自古汉语菹(zu),腌菜，泡菜，原义为剁，即剁碎的蔬菜（参照成语“人为刀俎，我为鱼肉”），进入古朝鲜后念jeo或ju音，chi-,即菜，念ji音。该食物在三国时期传入韩鲜半岛，拼写后来被修正为jimchi,最终被修正为kimchi.比较中国式英语pidgin,来自19世纪中期上海开埠时中国人对business的发音，在欧洲人听起来就是pidgin或pigeon,因此这种中国式英语就被嘲讽为pidgin English.
